Signs of Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect
 
NEGLECT
Bedsores Known often as "pressure sores or ulcers". These may not always be noticeable. Check the coccyx area and ankles and feet.
Skin rash
Infections
Unsanitary and unclean conditions
Lack of attention to resident's personal hygiene
Medical Neglect: Lack of care for existing medical problems .Dehydration may be noticed with cracked and dry lips resulting from lack of adequate precautions or assistance .
Skin Tears
Significant Weight Loss
Depression or isolation

Wandering around outside of the facility

ABUSE
Bruises, open wounds or welts
Fear or Anxiety
Unexplained refusal or inability to communicate
Disorientation
Presence of unjustifiable physical restraint
Prolonged or continual deprivation of food or water
Elder reports of being slapped, pushed or shaken
Injuries requiring emergency treatment or hospitalization

The signs listed above may be a result of a physical assault, sexual assault, battery or rape. Heavy medication or sedation or lack of proper medication can often be observed in the resident's mood or inability to communicate.
